Choosing a carbon filter
A carbon filter removes odor by pulling air through a bed of activated carbon. Size it two ways: the flange must match the duct and fan diameter, and the rated CFM must meet or exceed the fan so air spends enough time in the carbon. Virgin activated carbon with a deep bed lasts longer and scrubs more completely than thin or recycled carbon.
Pre-filters and lifespan
The fabric pre-filter sleeve stops dust from clogging the carbon. Wash or replace it regularly and the filter lasts far longer. Humidity above about 70 percent shortens carbon life, so keep the filter in conditioned air where possible. Replace the filter when odor starts to pass through.
Ozone
Ozone generators neutralize odor in exhaust ducting and unoccupied spaces. Ozone is harmful to people, pets and plants at working concentrations, so it should never be run in an occupied room or in the grow space itself.
Carbon Filters & Odor Control FAQ
How long does a carbon filter last?
Typically one to two years depending on humidity, dust and runtime. Replace it when odor begins to escape.
Can I wash a carbon filter?
Wash the pre-filter only. The carbon itself cannot be washed or recharged at home.
Is ozone safe in a grow room?
No. Use ozone only in ducting or in empty rooms, and ventilate before re-entering.
