Choosing a light source
Each technology has a place in a grow, and many rooms use more than one.
- LED Grow Lights: the most efficient option, with lower heat and lower amp draw for the same light. Full spectrum fixtures cover veg and flower, and string lights suit greenhouses and hoop houses.
- HPS & CMH Fixtures: double ended HPS delivers high intensity over a wide footprint, and CMH adds a fuller spectrum with lower operating temperature. Grow Light Bulbs covers the replacement lamps.
- {L:t5}: cool running and gentle, the standard for clones, seedlings and mother plants.
- Under Canopy Lights: supplemental light aimed up into the lower canopy where top lighting cannot reach.
Getting more from the light you have
Reflectors & Hoods direct lamp output down onto the canopy, and air cooled models remove lamp heat through ducting. Reflective Films line walls and floors so light that misses the plants is returned instead of absorbed. Both raise usable light without adding a single watt.
Power, control and hanging
Power & Extension Cords are rated by wire gauge and voltage, so match them to the fixture load. Lighting Controllers & Timers switch banks of lights safely from one trigger, with timers to set the photoperiod. Hangers, Lifts & Glasses set and hold fixture height, and grow room glasses correct color under HPS and LED so plants can be inspected accurately.
Grow Lights & Lighting Equipment FAQ
Are LED grow lights better than HPS?
LED fixtures produce more light per watt and less heat, which lowers power and cooling costs. HPS costs less up front and still performs well in rooms that need the extra heat. Many growers switch as fixtures come up for replacement.
What light is best for clones and seedlings?
T5 fluorescent or low wattage LED strips. They run cool and provide gentle, even light that will not stress young plants.
How often should grow light bulbs be replaced?
HPS and metal halide lamps lose output with use. Most growers replace them every 9 to 12 months of regular flowering cycles, and CMH lamps on a similar schedule.
Do I need a lighting controller?
Once you run more than a few high wattage fixtures, yes. A relay controller spreads the load across circuits and switches every light from a single timer.
What does reflective film do?
It returns light that would otherwise be absorbed by walls and floors back to the plants, which evens out coverage at the edges of the room.
