Sizing an air pump
Air pumps are rated by output in liters per minute and gallons per hour. Small pumps from 24 to 143 GPH with one, two or four outlets suit single buckets and small reservoirs. Commercial pumps from 602 to 2,267 GPH run many sites from one unit. Pumps work harder the deeper the stone sits, so size up for deep reservoirs and long tubing runs.
Air dividers
A divider splits the output of one pump between several lines. Chrome dividers have an individual valve on each outlet so every line can be balanced, and accept 3/8 inch inside diameter hose at the inlet. Plastic dividers are the economical option. Both come in sizes from 4 outlets up.
Air Pumps & Air Dividers FAQ
How big an air pump do I need?
A common guide is around one liter per minute of air for every gallon of solution, then size up for deep reservoirs or long runs of tubing.
What tubing do air pumps use?
These pumps and the matching air stones use 3/16 inch inside diameter air tubing.
Should the pump sit above the water?
Yes, or use a check valve. If the pump stops, water can siphon back down the line into a pump that sits below the water level.
