What silica does
Plants deposit silica in cell walls, which makes stems thicker, leaves tougher and the whole plant more resistant to heat, drought and chewing and piercing insects. It also helps hold heavy flowers upright.
Potassium silicate or monosilicic acid
Potassium silicate is the economical choice and is used from early veg. It raises pH, so it goes into the reservoir first and pH is corrected after. Stabilized monosilicic acid is already in the form roots absorb, acts faster, doses in milliliters and does not swing pH the same way.
Silica Supplements FAQ
When should I add silica?
From early veg through mid flower. Most growers stop in the final weeks.
Why add silica first?
Potassium silicate is alkaline and reacts with concentrated nutrients. Diluting it in water first prevents precipitation.
Can silica be used as a foliar spray?
Yes, at a low dilution. It helps the leaf surface resist mildew and pests.
