Clear greenhouse film
Standard greenhouse film is 6 mil polyethylene with built in ultraviolet protection, which is what stops it from turning brittle in the sun. A semi clear finish diffuses light for more even growth. Woven film in 9 mil is reinforced for strength and resists tearing in wind, which makes it the choice for exposed sites and larger structures. Film is sold by width and length, so allow extra on every side for fastening.
Light deprivation film
Blackout film is black on one side to block light completely and white on the other to reflect heat away from the crop. Pulling it over a greenhouse or hoop house for part of each day shortens the photoperiod and triggers flowering on your schedule. It comes in 6 mil film and heavy woven versions with anti drip properties.
Fastening
Wiggle wire presses into an aluminum channel and grips the film along its whole length, which spreads wind load and lets you re-tension or replace the film later. Snap on film clips hold film to round tubing on hoop houses and low tunnels, and are sized to the pipe diameter. Greenhouse tape repairs tears before they spread.
Greenhouse Film & Light Deprivation Film FAQ
How long does greenhouse film last?
UV treated 6 mil film is typically rated for about four years. Woven reinforced film generally lasts longer in harsh conditions.
Which side of blackout film faces out?
White side out during hot weather to reflect heat, black side in to block light.
What size film clips do I need?
Match the clip to the outside diameter of the tubing. Clips are listed by the pipe sizes they fit.
