Solvents by use
Ethanol is the general purpose extraction and winterization solvent, and a heptane denatured version is available. Heptane, hexane and pentane are non polar solvents used in chromatography, crystallization and cleanup steps. Acetone and isopropyl alcohol are the standard cleaning solvents for glassware, tools and equipment. Propylene glycol in USP grade is a carrier and heat transfer fluid.
Process fluids
Low temperature chiller fluid circulates through recirculating chillers and jacketed vessels without freezing. Vacuum pump oil should be changed regularly, since contaminated oil is the main cause of poor vacuum and pump wear. High purity butane and butane and propane blends are supplied by tank exchange.
Safety and compliance
Most of these products are flammable and must be stored, handled and used according to the safety data sheet, fire code and local regulations. Some ship by freight or drop ship only, and hydrocarbon extraction is restricted to licensed, engineered facilities.
Lab Solvents FAQ
What grade of solvent do I need?
Use lab or high purity grade for anything that contacts product, and match the grade to your process and regulatory requirements.
How should solvents be stored?
In approved containers in a flammable storage cabinet or room, away from ignition sources, with ventilation and grounding as required by code.
How often should vacuum pump oil be changed?
Whenever it looks cloudy or discolored, and after any run that pulls solvent vapor through the pump.
