From plug to slab
Stone wool holds water and air in a stable ratio and carries no nutrition of its own, which makes it the standard inert medium for hydroponics. Cuttings and seeds start in plugs or mini cubes, move up into 3, 4 or 6 inch blocks, and finish on a slab or in a larger block fed by drippers.
Preparing it
Stone wool arrives with a high pH. Soak blocks and slabs in a pH 5.5 nutrient solution before planting and let them drain. Blocks with a drainage hole or channel shed excess water faster and keep the root zone aerated on flood tables.
Rockwool & Stone Wool FAQ
Do I need to soak rockwool before use?
Yes. Soak in pH 5.5 nutrient solution for an hour, then drain. Do not squeeze it out.
What size block for a full cycle?
A 4 inch block feeds a plant through veg. Set it on a 6 inch block or a slab for flower.
Can rockwool be reused?
It is a single use medium. Used blocks can be shredded for outdoor soil or disposed of.
