Circulation
Moving air across the canopy evens out temperature and humidity, strengthens stems and breaks up the still, humid pockets where powdery mildew and botrytis start. Horizontal air flow fans are hung in a row to push air in a loop around a greenhouse. Compact pole mount fans do the same job inside a tent, and oscillating pedestal fans cover open rooms.
Exhaust
Shutter fans mount in a wall opening and move large volumes of air out of a greenhouse, shop or outbuilding, with louvers that close when the fan stops. Belt driven models turn a large blade slowly for high volume and low noise. Portable axial fans move air through doorways and down rows, and dry out a space quickly.
Circulation Fans & Exhaust Fans FAQ
How many circulation fans do I need?
Enough that every leaf moves gently. In a greenhouse, space horizontal air flow fans so each one picks up the airstream from the last.
Should fans blow directly on plants?
No. Aim for gentle, indirect movement across and above the canopy. Constant direct wind causes wind burn.
What is a shutter fan?
A wall mounted exhaust fan with louvers that open under airflow and close when the fan is off, which keeps weather and pests out.
