Matching the lamp to the ballast
A lamp must match the ballast in type, wattage and base. Single ended lamps screw into a mogul socket, and double ended lamps clip into a DE fixture at both ends. HPS and MH lamps need their own ballast type unless the ballast is switchable, and CMH lamps run only on low frequency CMH ballasts.
Spectrum
HPS is red and orange weighted for flowering. Metal halide is blue weighted for vegetative growth. CMH lamps are sold by color temperature: 3000K class lamps lean red for flowering, 4000K class lamps are balanced for full cycle use, and red enhanced and high CRI versions fine tune the mix.
Grow Light Bulbs FAQ
When should I replace an HPS bulb?
After roughly 9 to 12 months of 12 hour flowering cycles. The lamp still lights, but output has dropped enough to affect yield.
Can I use a double ended bulb in a single ended fixture?
No. Double ended lamps only fit double ended fixtures.
What does an ignitor do?
It provides the high voltage pulse that starts an HPS or pulse start MH lamp. A lamp that will not strike on a working ballast often points to the ignitor.
