Which saucer
Clear plastic saucers are the light, low cost option for smaller pots from 6 to 18 inch. Premium black injection molded saucers from 10 to 25 inch are thicker and hold their shape under heavy containers. Deep pot saucers from 8 to 25 inch hold far more water, which lets plants draw from the base between waterings and gives room to collect a full runoff reading.
Sizing a saucer
Measure the base of the pot, not the rim, and choose a saucer at least an inch or two wider. Fabric pots spread when filled, so size up again. Pair the saucer with a pot elevator so the pot does not sit in its own runoff.
Plant Pot Saucers FAQ
What size saucer do I need?
Choose a saucer one to two inches wider than the base of the pot, and wider again for fabric pots, which spread out when filled.
What is a deep saucer for?
It holds more runoff, which protects floors during heavy feeding and allows bottom watering.
Should pots sit in the runoff?
Not for long. Standing water invites root rot. A pot elevator keeps the base of the pot above the water line.
