Submersible pumps
Submersible pumps sit in the reservoir and push solution to a flood tray, a drip manifold or a top feed ring. Models run 100, 159, 238, 396, 528, 660, 792, 1,056 and 1,585 GPH. The rating is the flow with no lift, and flow falls as the pump pushes higher, so check the height from the pump to the outlet and choose a size above what the system needs.
Sump pumps
Sump pumps move large volumes fast: emptying a reservoir, transferring mixed solution or clearing a drain tray. Sizes are 925, 1,585 and 2,378 GPH, and matching garden hose adapters in 1/2, 3/4 and 1 inch connect them to a standard hose.
Filter bags
A pump filter bag wraps the pump and keeps media, roots and debris out of the impeller, which is the most common cause of a failed pump.
Submersible Water Pumps & Sump Pumps FAQ
What size pump do I need for a flood tray?
Enough to fill the tray in a few minutes at the height of your table. For a 4 by 8 tray on a standard stand, pumps in the 400 to 800 GPH range are common.
What does head height mean?
The vertical distance the pump must lift the water. Flow drops as head height rises, so compare pumps at your actual lift.
How do I protect the pump?
Use a filter bag, keep the pump fully submerged while it runs and clean the intake between crops.
